Best ways to turn a photo into a MetaHuman (2026).

There is no button in MetaHuman Creator that takes a photo. Every route either builds a head mesh from the photo first, which MetaHuman Creator then conforms to, or builds the MetaHuman for you. Here are the routes people use in 2026, what each needs from you and what it costs, from each maker's own pages. FaceNinja is one of them, and we say where the others fit better.

Two steps, whoever does them

In Unreal Engine 5.6 or later, MetaHuman Creator runs inside the editor and can conform a MetaHuman to a head mesh. So the question is who makes that mesh from the photo, how close it is to the person, and what happens to the skin, the hair and the neck.

  1. A head mesh from the photo

Built by hand, by an add-on, by a service, or by a general image-to-3D service followed by a conform step.

  2. Conform in MetaHuman Creator

The mesh is conformed, then the skin, the grooms and a body are chosen. Without a skin override, MetaHuman uses one of its library skins.

What about general image-to-3D services?

Several general image-to-3D services make a mesh of anything from one picture, and Mesh to MetaHuman can conform a MetaHuman to almost any head mesh. That gives a quick look-alike, but the mesh is not on MetaHuman topology, so the conform step has to guess the face, and the skin, the grooms and the neck are left for you to do.

Which route fits

  • One hero character with art direction: a freelance artist, or FaceBuilder for Blender or MetahumanModeler if you do it yourself.
  • You have a scan or a sculpt already: Mesh to MetaHuman in Unreal.
  • Many heads, a pipeline, or heads made by your AI agent, with the skin, grooms and neck decided: FaceNinja.
  • A full MetaHuman generated inside Unreal, also from a text brief: Infinite Characters.
  • A head on MetaHuman topology through an API you can buy today: KeenFace.

Questions about photo to MetaHuman

01Can MetaHuman Creator make a MetaHuman from a photo?
Not directly. It conforms a MetaHuman to a head mesh or builds an identity from video footage. A photo first has to become a head mesh, by hand, with an add-on or through a service.
02What is the best free way to make a MetaHuman from a photo?
Epic's tools cost nothing extra under Epic's licence, but you need a head mesh first. Building one yourself takes the most time. FaceNinja's 20 sample heads let you try the whole MetaHuman Creator step free before you make your own.
03How long does it take?
By hand, hours to days. FaceNinja usually takes 10–20 minutes a head; Infinite Characters lists under 7 minutes. Then the steps in MetaHuman Creator take a few minutes.
04Do these routes include hair?
MetaHuman hair is a groom you choose in MetaHuman Creator. FaceNinja names the grooms and their colours; Infinite Characters delivers hair with the MetaHuman; the other routes leave the choice to you.
